Winter in the Woods

Finish the story begins with: “She was unaware that she was being watched.”

Warmed by the fire, Suzie descended five steps down into the yard. With a deep intake of winter air, she lifted her face toward heaven and tasted a sharp twang of forest pine.

She exhaled. For a moment, her hot breath hung in a moist cloud.

With closed eyes, she inhaled again. Another aroma she couldn’t quite identify entered the mix. She hesitated, confused by a gentle breeze that swirled a curl of smoke down through the trees.

Then she heard a sound. She laughed when she saw Joe on snow skis.

“Come, King,” she called. “Breakfast! Cinnamon buns.”
