The great blue heron is almost my favorite bird to watch.
One crisp, windy day last spring, I was lucky to observe this great bird busily fishing.
The tide was out, leaving small rivulets on a little island in the middle of the Elk River slough. My small camera handled the considerable distance by giving the photos a “painterly” quality which I found fascinating.
Far enough away to take no notice of his admirer, the bird was oblivious to his audience and to the wind. When he lifted his head to swallow a fish, I got a very nice surprise.
